The Spiderwick Chronicles leave the old-fashioned charm of New England far behind and head south for some fiendish faerie fun in the hot Florida sun. Eleven-year-old Nicholas Vargas only thinks his life has been turned upside down after his developer father remarries and moves his new wife and daughter into the soon-to-be completed Mangrove Hollow.
But an "expedition" to a nearby lake turns up a little nixie with a giant problem - the huge, lumbering, fire-breathing variety - and it's up to Nick; his stepsister, Laurie; and his big brother, Julian (plus a familiar face from the original Spiderwick Chronicles) to figure out the best way to stop a host of rampaging giants before all of Florida goes up in smoke.
This is the first book in the spin off series Beyond the Spiderwick Chronicles. This time instead of being in New England we are transported to sunny Florida for our adventure. Nick does not like the fact that his dad remarried or that he had to give up his room, so his new stepsister Laurie could take it over. Nick gets roped into Laurie's adventures into the marsh so she can find some of the creatures from Arthur Spiderwick's Field Guide. Never think she would actually find anything, Nick and Laurie must find a way to save their home or see Florida go up in flames.
Having read the original Spiderwick Chronicles this is a pretty good spin off. Fans of the original will love the new adventures and new characters. A few of the characters from the original do make a cameo appearance, but you can read Beyond the Spiderwick Chronicles without reading Spiderwick Chronicles. A pretty typical middle-grade novel filled with action, adventure, and a cliff hanging ending (preparing you for the next book in the trilogy). This is a nice quick read, that would not overwhelm young readers, perfect for upper elementary.
